It's a project about smell. Uh and what I was trying to do was explore the untapped potential of the sense of smell. So the example that they have on show here is the smell blind date. This came from research that was being done uhm a study by Bedkin who who looked at smell as a way of identifying potential partners and it's all to do with the uh.. apocrine gland information is where natural smell emissions leave the body. Apocrine glands unfortunately for me, are in the armpits and the crotch which is why they are wearing this suit. But selecting a mate through smell identification leads to children with a better immune system. What you have here is the visual sense is completely removed from the blind date situation and truly is a blind date. What's happening is these pouches that we see here are containing smells that are leaving the apocrine glands in the body. That's not actually a bad thing. We assume that smell is leaving the human body if it's kind of unpleasant. They're only unpleasant when they become oxidized. This stops the oxidization process as well so you're getting pure smell information coming out. I mean it sounds very abstract at the moment but there are there's a tribe called the Desana tribe in the Amazon and their whole culture is based on smell and for them it's a taboo, to marry somebody with the same sense, with the same smell outwards from your body as your own. Uh, some research was saying that a lot of Americans have totally lost touch with their personal identity because they're covering up their smell emissions so much through aftershave, through perfumes, through deodorant and they're losing touch with who they are. So we choose people through the way they look, how fashion influences those kinds of things, hairstyles, your weight, all of these kind of things, they're influencing our initial attraction at the moment but in many ways it's flawed. Smell is a much more meaningful, truthful way of identifying with potential partners.

냄새 즉 사람에게서 나는 체취가 참을수 없는 악취가 되기도 한다. 그래서 미국인들은 이 체취를 죽이는 일에 힘쓴다. 특히 미국여성보다 미국남성에게서 냄새가 더 심하게 난다. 그리고 이것은 인종에 따라서도 다른데 특히 흑인에게서 많이 난다. 델리에 있으면 가끔 양복을 입은 흑인손님이 오는데 향수를 많이 뿌리고 들어오면 정말 숨을 쉴 수가 없다. 자신이 냄새가 나는 것을 미리 알고 향수를 뿌리는 것인데 어쩔수 없다.

얼마전에 TV에서 보니 Kim Kardashian이 여동생의 남편(brother-in-law) 입에서 냄새(악취)가 난다고 동생 앞에서 이야기를 하면서 "그 사실을 아느냐?" 고 묻자 이 말을 들은 동생은 웃으며 "나에겐 안난다." 고 말하는 장면을 슬쩍 지나칠 수 있었다. 안난다고 대답한 것이 사실인지 아닌지는 알 수 없다. 사랑하는 사람에게서는 악취도 향내로 날 수 있을 것이다. 미국인들이야 사람 대놓고도 그 앞에서 아무말이나 다 하니 그리 이상한 일은 아니지만 그 뒤의 반응이 궁금해서 안보던 채널인데 유심히 들여다 보고 있었다. Kim은 당장 치과에 가서 이를 고치고 와야한다고 소리를 질렀고 brother-in-law는 치과는 무서워서 갈 수 없다고 겁먹은 소리로 말한다. 정말로 덩치가 크고 무섭게 생긴 어른이 치과 가기가 무섭다는 것을 보고 그것조차 믿기지 않았다. 결국은 이를 고치러 치과에 갔다. 위에 나오는 무섭게 생긴 남자인데 그렇게 말한것이 정말 귀엽다. 참고로 Kim Kardashian의 매력적인 사진을 아래 한장 올린다. 그렇게 솔직하게 말을 했다니 참 그녀답다는 생각이 든다. 여동생이 언니에게 "솔직하게 말해주어서 이를 고쳤으니 고맙다."고 말하는 장면도 있었다.

냄새에 관한 다른 에피소드는 이런것이 있다. 학교에서 아이들에게 바이올린을 가르치는 딸아이가 하루는 아이들에게 "오른쪽 손에 활을 잡고 어깨를 올려서 바이올린 브릿지에 대라고 했다. 아이들이 다함께 팔을 올리자마자 한 여자아이가 커다랗게 이렇게 말을 했다. "이게 무슨 냄새야?" 아이들이 다 놀라서 서로를 쳐다보는 장면~ 생각만해도 웃긴다. 한 남자아이의 겨드랑이(armpit)에서 나는 냄새를 참지 못하고 소리를 지른 것이다. 한국에서는 상대방이 민망할까봐 그냥 참는데 반해 미국아이(미국인)들은 자신에게 돌아오는 불이익을 보면 이런식으로 그 자리에서 당장 소리를 지르고 불편해(불만)한다.

이때 가르치는 사람이 민망해 하면 안된다. 미국식으로 대처하는 방법이 있다. 한번 생각해보고 아래 쓴 글을 열어보면 좋겠다.
