My
husband’s friend, Dong Hyun, was very kind to us. When he saw that we
were eating off a cardboard box, he brought us a large folding table
from his church. We ate and studied at the table. We had an electric
rice cooker from Korea. Every day we ate rice because the price of food
was so much higher in America than in Korea.
One day I boiled water for ramen to which I added rice. In Korea, we would have thrown such a meal in the garbage. But this soup was delicious. Another night I invited Dong Hyun to dinner. I boiled seaweed soup. My younger son, who was four at the time, was so anxious to eat the soup that when I placed the bowls of soup on the table, he stuck his hand into his bowl. His hand got burned. I was so scared to see his burned hand. I hugged him and prayed,
“Please, God help my family!”
After that dinner, Dong Hyun would bring me fish heads from a fish store owned by the parents of one of his students. He said that fish heads taste better than other parts of the fish.
I made hot spicy fish soup with them. I will never forget the taste of the cod heads. I knew that even though poor people live without money, by staying together they can feel warm.
I really envied those people who owned a fish store.
Dong Hyun also brought us bags of breads that I had never seen before. He held up one such bread and said, “This is a bagel. The Jewish people make bagels. They put butter or cream cheese on them. I like them plain. These come from a deli that is owned by parents of one of my students. People who own their own businesses are successful in America. But how can a Korean make money here? The Yanks came first. Korean worked as janitors, cleaned bathrooms. Finally, they got their own businesses.”
