My friend’s name is Louie and he is 84 years old. He is the first customer to enter our deli every morning. His wife died a long time ago so now he lives alone in an apartment near our deli.
Louie works for an oil company where he has been employed for many years. He starts work every day at 7:00 AM. First, he comes to our deli at 6:00 AM, gets his coffee, and sleeps in his car until it’s time to work. When I give him his coffee, I always say, “Here you go, sleeping coffee.”
Sometimes when we open late, I miss him. I get concerned when I don’t see him for a few days. As I am driving to work, I often think about him. Louie stops in for a second coffee around 10:00 AM, during his work break. I often wonder whether he will die when he has to retire. Having a job to go to gives him a reason to get up and begin his day. One time, when I hadn’t seen him in a while, I got worried. When he showed up again, I asked him, “Where have you been?” He answered, “I went to Florida where my sister-in-law lives for my vacation.”
There was a special moment that I shared with Louie one which I will always remember. He looked a little tired and I could see that he was having a problem with one of his legs from the way he limped into the deli. I looked at his face, and saw in it my grandmother’s face. She died last year at the age of 87. That day I reached over the counter to touch Louie’s hand. He suddenly curled it into a tight fist hard as rock. I didn’t understand why he had done this until I noticed that his hand which was coated with oil and dirty from his job. I held it gently and said, “It’s OK.” And I shook hands with him and smiled. At that moment we became friends. Louie isn’t ashamed of his dirty hands anymore.
Now when I am busy and Louie comes in, he touches my hand as I hand him his coffee. That always makes me feel better!

이 글은 제가 영어를 배우기 위해 다니던 한 대학의 ESL CLASS에서 "Chicken Soup" 이라는 책을 읽으면서 공부했었는데~ 그 당시 저의 스토리를 적어서 기록해 두었던 이야기입니다.
미국에 가면 미국사람들 천지여서 미국사람들을 만나서 영어나 미국문화를 그냥 배우는 것으로 생각할 수 있는데 전혀 모르는 타인종의 사람들을 만나서 날마다 생활하는 것은 마치 다른 별에 간 것 같다고 표현할 수 있습니다. 그냥 주어지는 것은 없습니다. 한편으로는 잃으면서 또 다른 것을 얻게 되는 것입니다.
위에 올린 사진은 최근에 지나간 물건들을 정리하다가~ 저의 오래된 두 친구 루이와 아더를 발견하고 너무 즐거워서 스캔한 것입니다. 루이는 저희 델리에서 산 샌드위치 백을 아더는 신문을 들고 있습니다. 서로 다르게 생긴(한 사람은 흑인이고 한사람은 백인이니까요) 이 두 사람이 같이 잘 어울려 다니는 것이 참 신기했습니다. 거짓말처럼 서로 조화롭게 살아갑니다. 이 미국이 힘을 만드는 원동력이 바로 이 서로 다른 인간과 인간의 조화라고 생각합니다. 즉 이민 온 사람들이 어울려서 자신의 신분에 따라 열심히 생활하는 환경, 바로 이민의 나라 미국을 말합니다. 루이와 아더는 흙 묻은 옷을 입고 휴식시간(break)이 되면 커피를 사러 옵니다.
미국인들이 커피를 마시는 문화는 오랜 세월 생활화 된 것으로 보입니다. 커피와 함께 하루가 시작됩니다. 커피를 마시지 않고는 하루가 시작될 수 없고 커피의 맛도 아주 다양한 것을 알 수 있습니다. 다양하다는 것은 단순히 커피에서 나는 향(flavor)뿐만이 아니라 밀크와 슈가의 양에 따라 커피 고유의 맛을 음미하는 것을 말합니다. 커피에 설탕이나 밀크를 넣지 않은 블랙커피를 마시거나 밀크의 양이나 슈가의 종류와 각기 다른 양으로 자신만의 고유한 맛을 갖고 있어서 미국인에게 "커피를 어떻게 마시고 싶으냐?" 고 묻지 않고 그냥 밀크와 슈가를 다 넣은 커피를 건네주면 그들의 대답은 "No, thanks(괜찮어, 안마셔)!" 입니다. 밀크와 슈가의 종류도 무척 다양합니다. 커피를 어떻게 마시고 즐기는가 하는 부분은 다음에 다루기로 하겠습니다. 이렇게 마시고 싶을 때 마시고 그 맛을 엔조이하는 것은, 좋은 직업을 갖고 잘 사는 사람들만의 특권이 아니라 대중화 되어 이렇게 막노동을 하는 사람들에게도 같습니다. 거짓말처럼 이 회사의 사장도 부사장도 같은 커피를 마시러 옵니다. 저는 이런 것을 감히 자유(liberty, freedom)라고 말하고 싶습니다. 부자인 너도 먹고 가난한 나도 먹을 수 있는 것, 엔조이할 수 있는 것, 그것이 바로 평등(equal)입니다.
liberty: the state of being free within society from oppressive restrictions imposed by authority on one's way of life, behavior, or political views.
a right or privilege
freedom: the power or right to act, speak, or think as one wants without hindrance or restraint.
equal: being the same in quantity, size, degree, or value.
