어떤이는 게이나 레즈비언으로 태어날까?
이렇게 태어난 사람의 입장에서 보면 마치 머리가 두개로 태어난 것 같은 심정이 아닐까?
어느날 TV를 보니 머리가 두개로 태어난 사람이 있었다.
둘은 항상 붙어 다녀야만 하는 운명이었다.
모자 하나에 두개의 머리를 넣는다(hide)고 두개의 머리가 하나의 머리가 되진 않는다.
각각을 위한 두개의 모자를 사야할 뿐이다.
캘리포니아에선 게이 메리지(Gay Marriage)에 대한 논란이 한창이다.
나와는 다른 별세계의 사람들이란 생각을 하다가
영국이 낳은 세계의 패션 디자이너 알렉산더 맥퀸의 죽음을 접하고 보니 드는 생각이다.
여자인 나는 여자로서 만족하면서 살아간다.
내 안에 남자가 살고 있지 않아서 다행이다.
슬퍼서 잠도 안자고 울어본 기억이 있다.
어느 남자도 이런 경험을 하지는 않을 것이다.
반대로 어떤 남자가 너무 슬퍼서 잠도 안자고 울었다면
그는 게이임에 틀림없다.
어느 남자도 이런 일을 하지 않을 것이기 때문이다.
머리를 두개 가진 그 남자의 머릿 속를 헤아려 볼만하지
않은가?
한동안 TV에서 몇명의 게이들이 모여서 시청자의 집 분위기를 바꾸어주는 프로그램을 방영한 적이 있다. 나는 패션과 디스플레이에 관심이 많아서 자주 보는 편이었는데 보면서 느낀 것은 그들의 취향이 여자인 나와 비슷하다는 점이었다. 아름다운 것을 보고, 만들고, 사고, 웃고, 떠들고 항상 즐거운 여자 말이다. 그들의 재잘대는 웃음 소리가 들린다. 또한 패션 디자이너를 발굴하는 프로젝트 런웨이라는 프로그램에도 게이들이 등장하여 우승까지 가는 것을 자주 볼 수 있다. 거기 등장한 게이들은 내가 그동안 보아온, 내가 기대한 남성과는 완전히 달랐다.

McQueen was gay, and claimed he realised his sexual orientation when he was six. He told his family when he was 18 and, after a rocky period, his family accepted his sexuality. He described comming out at a young age by saying, "I was sure of myself and my sexuality and I've got nothing to hide. I went straight from my mother's womb onto the gay parade". In the summer of 2000, McQueen unofficially married his partner George Forsyth, a documentary filmmaker, on a yacht in Ibiza. The relationship ended a year later and McQueen and Forsyth formed a close friendship.
